Large Pond & Small Lake Management in Minnesota: What You Need to Know Before You Call

Emily had a beautiful 1 acre pond on her Prior Lake property that had been dug out about 10 years before this story. It was a peaceful haven for birds, pollinators, ducks, even deer, and her own family—but when nutrient overload and floating plant growth really got out of hand over the years, she didn’t know where to turn. She thought chemicals were the only option, but the risks were staggering. She was nervous about exposing her children and the local wildlife to dangerous chemicals. She reached out, and we worked together to find a natural, phased solution. A combination of a floating fountain installation, monthly natural treatments, and one day of manual cleanup got things moving again—without hurting her ecosystem. And in the long-run it cost a fraction of the invasive alternatives plus added to the beauty of her backyard.

Why This Matters

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re managing a large natural-style pond or small lake—often with clay-lined bottoms, years of growth, and unclear options. You’re not alone. Every week, we talk with homeowners and land managers in southern Minnesota and around the Twin Cities asking:

“What’s the best way to clear algae without hurting wildlife?”

“Can I just use those spray chemicals online?”

“Do I need a fountain and an aerator?”

“Is dredging my only option?”

“How much is this all going to cost me?”

This guide was built to answer those exact questions and save you time. Whether you’re starting from scratch or managing an aging pond system, we’ll walk you through your options step-by-step, including professional insights, pricing ranges, and tools to help you move forward confidently and avoid the Most Common Pond Maintenance Mistakes.

1. Fountains: Beauty + Function

Fountains do more than look pretty—although yes, they’re stunning with customizable spray patterns and lighting for nighttime enjoyment. But the real magic is in what they do at the surface:

  • Circulation: Prevents stagnant zones where algae thrives.
  • Oxygenation: Helps beneficial bacteria thrive, especially near the surface.
  • Deters mosquitoes: Moving water disrupts breeding.
  • Adds wildlife appeal: Birds, frogs, and pollinators are drawn to gentle movement and sound.

Fountains are a great aesthetic and entry-level aeration solution. They work best for moving surface water, shallower water, pushing back floating weeds and debris, and for cosmetic upgrades. Basic fountain setups typically start around $6,000–$8,000, with more advanced lighted and multi-pattern designs ranging from $9,000–$14,000, depending on pond size and desired effect.

These are one-time system investments with primary seasonal maintenance at the beginning and end of the season, as well as occasional filter cleaning as needed.

2. Aerators: Critical for Pond Health

Where fountains beautify, aerators stabilize.

  • Deep oxygenation: Aerators move oxygen to the bottom layers where sludge accumulates.
  • Supports fish and bacteria: Crucial for healthy, thriving aquatic life (especially for fish health over winter).
  • Reduces muck and odor: Oxygen fuels bacteria that break down debris.
  • Prevents turnover: Especially important in deeper ponds or those with varying depths.

Many natural ponds that are long / extended or that are shaped in curves / angles need multiple diffusers to reach dead zones in these irregular shapes. Full-service aerator installations—including equipment, weighted lines, and cabinets—typically range from $4,000–$10,000+, depending on acreage, depth, and number of stations required.

These are one-time system investments with minimal seasonal maintenance.

3. Natural Water Treatments: Gentle, Effective, and Family-Safe

Not all pond treatments are equal. Natural treatments use biologically safe formulations such as beneficial bacteria to balance the ecosystem without harming fish, frogs, pets, or native pollinators.
We offer:

  • Monthly maintenance treatments: $250–$450 each (typically 7 per year).
  • Single-blast treatments: $800–$1,400 for quick-impact issues like seasonal algae blooms.

These are the ONLY treatments Superior Ponds provides—safe for families and the environment, with ingredients that support, not disrupt, the natural cycle. We customize these treatments for each pond as every pond is different.

A Word on Harsh Chemical Treatments (We Don’t Use Them)

Some companies offer aggressive chemical shock treatments that require hazmat suits, restricted access for days, and leave a toxic residue in your pond that can leach into the surrounding earth. These treatments often kill every living thing in your water system, including fish, frogs, aquatic insects, and beneficial plants. They’re designed for industrial runoff containment, not family backyards.

These methods require state-issued aquatic pesticide applicator licenses and are subject to strict DNR regulations. We do not offer or recommend these for backyard ecosystems. As the Minnesota DNR states, any use of aquatic pesticides must be carefully assessed for environmental impact. Our goal is to create a sustainable state that we can all enjoy for years to come, and we firmly believe that can be done without the use of harsh chemicals.

4. Manual Weed and Debris Removal (By Hand)

When ponds are overgrown or unmanaged for years, some clients like to start with a cosmetic reset before jumping into system installations. That’s where manual removal comes in:

  • Floating and shoreline weed removal
  • Heavy mat and surface debris clearing
  • Prep for future fountain or aerator systems

We use small portable boats, skimmers, nets, scythes, and trained techs to clear what we can in a 10-hour day. This includes travel time, prep, and safe disposal of debris (which often needs a lengthy drying time before final removal due to weight, moisture levels, and safe transportation of possible aquatic contaminants).

Pricing typically ranges from $1,800–$3,400 per day, depending on access, crew needs, and project complexity.

Note: This is not a long-term solution unless repeated, but it is oftentimes an excellent starting point. “Manual removal paired with ecosystem-safe treatments can create lasting improvement in as little as one season—especially when paired with proactive management.” – Aquascape Inc. (Ecosystem Pond Practices)

5. Dredging: Why It’s Risky and Not Offered

Some clients ask about mechanical dredging—using barges or excavators to dig out pond bottoms to remove excessivly weedy shorelines and mucky bottoms. While sometimes necessary for farm ponds or stormwater retention systems, for residential or natural clay-bottom ponds, dredging often:

  • Ruins the natural clay seal, causing long-term leak issues
  • Destroys beneficial bacteria and plant habitats
  • Requires restoration of slopes and depth contours

Costs $10,000–$100,000+ with significant environmental permitting and site preparation required

Because of these risks and methods, Superior Ponds does not offer dredging. We focus on natural, proactive care methods that preserve your pond’s beauty and ecological integrity. While dredging may end up being the best fit for your pond, there are other companies that specialize in this that can better serve with dredging than we can.
